I am going to be traveling this weekend and staying in a hotel.
I plan on bringing my Notebook PC along and using the hotel's wifi.
What I am wondering, is my browsing private when on https 443 sites over a unsecured wifi network? For example my banking, is someone going to be able to monitor my info or is the data encrypted and secured even though its on a unencrypted wifi signal?

For example my banking, is someone going to be able to monitor my info or is the data encrypted and secured even though its on a unencrypted wifi signal? You will be ok. Even though the signal can be intercepted due to the lack of security over the air, the contents are encrypted before being sent out. Any usernames, passwords, etc are encrypted in the payload so potential hacks just see garbage. If you are worried, just VPN from your laptop to a secure network first and you will be doubly protected by the tunnel wrapper. Another tip, dont leave your laptop on that network without a firewall or VPN connection when you arent using it or you will have vistors probing around your harddrive. Block inbound connections.

Ok, I am running Windows MCE 2005 so it should have the "new" Windows Firewall from XP SP2. I have always left that on for the very reasons you brought up!
I do also have a radio switch on my lappy so I can turn off the wireless with the flick of a switch and turn it back on the same way.

I went out to the Black Hills for my kid's wrestling tourny. It was the State Tournament. I got some pictures on my site over at davesplace.freehostia.com . My youngest at 7yrs old got his fingers slammed in a hotel door while horsing around with his friends and brother so he didnt compete, but my oldest at 9yrs placed 5th in the entire state. I never realized how bad hotel internet really is. Granted my room was just inside the reach of the access point, but still it sucked soooo bad that even TS2 had a hard time working.
